Utah Ski Season Preview

Know before you go

As the pandemic continues to affect nearly every aspect of our modern lives, the winter season is a welcome transition for those of us craving powder and solace in the Wasatch. With the 20-21 season revving up, prepare for new expectations and a different approach from our iconic ski resorts operating under the cloud of Coronavirus.

A quick word on the backcountry

As expected, we’re seeing increased traffic at backcountry trailheads from those who seek fresh turns and a socially distant day of skiing or splitboarding. If you intend to embark on backcountry missions this winter, it is essential to seek proper training and equip yourself with avalanche safety gear (and know how to use it!). If you haven’t already, I highly recommend completing an avalanche rescue clinic through the Utah Avalanche Center. The UAC also provides online classes (i.e. Know Before You Go) and tons of learning material on their website along with daily forecasts and observations. Be sure to check this forecast on the daily and follow @utavy on Instagram for the latest updates. Now, onto the ski resorts and chair-accessed skiing.

LOCAL SKI AREA PREVIEW

While our forecast for the next couple weeks looks quite dry, all ski areas plan to be spinning lifts by the end of this week (if not open already). With relatively cool temps and many of us doing the snow dance, we hope to see some promising weather patterns storm across the West during the second half of December. When skiing or riding, you can expect longer lift lines, fewer choices, less lodging/food services, and some solid parking lot tailgates. This season, head to the mountains with a full tank of gas, plenty of snacks, and a heavy dose of patience. With resorts limiting ticket sales and/or requiring reservations to cap the number of skiers and riders per day, be sure to rise and shine early to beat the crowds and find a parking spot (especially on pow days and holiday weekends).
