Finding Simplicity: Summer Activities of 2020
local adventures
While society continues to battle the pandemic, more folks than ever search for solace in the outdoors. With a whole lot of warm weather, social distancing, and online school ahead, I thought I’d share a few of Simplicity’s summer recommendations:
Hike
Jack’s Mountain, Salt Lake City - Located between Emigration and Parley’s Canyon near the “H” rock. It’s a short but challenging trail with great views of downtown and the valley, especially at sunset. There isn’t much shade so early morning or evening are best. Dogs are allowed on the trail, just remember to pack your pup some water (place it next to the Simplicity in the cooler :))
Deseret Peak, near Grantsville - At or over 11,000 feet, Deseret Peak is the tallest peak in the Stansbury Mountains. The 7.4 mile dog-friendly hike is filled with a mix of lush wildflower meadows with wildflowers, forest, mountain streams, and rocky terrain at the peak. The 360 views from the peak are incredible!
Golf
Gladstan Golf Course, Payson - The website claims it’s “One of Utah’s Best Kept Secrets.” I wouldn’t disagree! Beautiful valley views and canyon scenery are used to perfection to sculpt awe inspiring shots off the tee. I’m not going to say it’s difficult but it does take a lot of...um... balls to play Gladstan :/
Sand Hollow Resort, Hurricane - 27 holes plus a par 3 “Wee” course, yes please! The championship course is full of red rocks and red sand (I’ve heard, never been in it ;)). Get your camera ready on number twelve, one of the coolest tee shots in the state. The links course, with it’s big greens and fairways, is a blast to play too. Wildlife includes roadrunners, jackrabbits, birds of prey, and a Mule that always seems to find its way into my golf bag.
Beach
Rockport Reservoir, Peoa - Just an easy 45 minutes from Salt Lake, Rockport doesn’t attract the crowds like Jordanelle. To find the beach simply enter the state park and drive to the end of the road, where you’ll find the parking lot near the Cedar Point Campground. There are two inlets that contain sandy beaches.
Moon Lake, near Duchesne and Roosevelt - Moon lake is a two mile long lake located on the doorstep of the Uintahs. The area has easy access to hiking, camping, cabins, and small fishing boat rentals at the Moon Lake Resort. Wildlife is also abundant in the area. On our last visit, a huge badger crossed the road right in front of us! The lake’s star attraction for many is the large sandy beach dunes that stretch the length of its southwest side. Driving on the beach is allowed if the water is low enough but beware the Moon Lake Resort has a wall of shame for those that get stuck by driving too close to the water.
Paddleboard
Pineview Reservoir, Huntsville - Novice paddleboarders rejoice! Paddlers are protected by a generous amount of no wake zones and a variety of bays and inlets that provide for plenty of smooth paddling and area to explore.
